Land and Freedom tells the fictional story of David Carr, a working-class member of the Communist Party of Great Britain who decides to join the International Brigades in the fight against fascism in the Spanish Civil War. The film’s story closely recalls George Orwell’s Homage to Catalonia (1938), his memoir of his time in the International Brigades.
